South Africa’s Wine Country
West and north of Cape Town is South Africa’s Wine Country, known locally as the Cape Winelands. There are over 20 wine estates and at least 5 cooperative cellars, all about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Stellenbosch is at the heart of wine country and is the second oldest town in the country. It is well known for its Dutch Cape architecture and oak-lined streets, and is the perfect starting point for anyone who visits this part of the country.
Other towns to visit in the area include Fanschhoek and Paarl. Franschhoek is a town that was originally settled by Huguenots and is know for its restaurants and fine cuisine. There are also plenty of galleries and shops in this town and the surrounding valley, which has 8 of the country’s top 100 restaurants. Paarl is a beautiful area that is also home to the largest wine cellar in the world, KWV cellars.
Other popular places to visit in the Cape Winelands include Tulbagh, Dwarsrivier and McGregor, which is one of the best preserved examples of nineteenth century towns with its whitewashed thatched cottages. All around this beautiful part of South Africa are things to see and do, especially in the summer. It is an ideal place to visit or to look for a home in this part of the world.
